USB-C Hubs: What to Check Before You Buy
Thin laptops often have only a couple of USB-C ports. A hub adds ports such as HDMI, USB-A and an SD card reader. Not every hub works with every laptop, so check these points.
Best for: Laptops with few ports.
Skip if: Your laptop's USB-C port does not support video output.
Check first: Port list, video support, pass-through wattage, and refresh rate.
Start with the ports you actually use
List the devices you plug in. Typical needs are HDMI for a monitor, USB-A for a mouse or drive, and an SD card slot for photos. Buy for those ports rather than the longest list.
Check your laptop first
- Video output only works if your laptop's USB-C port supports it (for example DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt).
- Power pass-through lets you charge the laptop through the hub. The hub's wattage should meet your laptop's needs.
- HDMI resolution and refresh rate vary. A hub may support 4K at a lower refresh rate than you want.
Things that catch people out
Ports often share bandwidth, so several fast devices at once can be slower. Hubs can get warm during heavy use. Cheaper hubs may not be compatible with every device.
Our analysis
If you only need one extra port, a small adapter may be simpler than a full hub. If you work at a desk with a monitor and several accessories, a hub with pass-through charging is worth comparing.
